dolphin a member of the suborder Odonotoceti of the order Cetacea, the whales. Includes the Amazon and Ganges freshwater dolphins, the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the bottle-nosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and the Arctic dolphin, more commonly called the beluga whale.
