DNA methyltransferase

An enzyme that adds methyl groups to DNA (nucleic acids) so as to modify gene expression.

Types of DNA methyltransferase
• DNMT1—Responsible for hemimethylated CpG island methylation.
• TRDMT1 (formerly DNMT2, renamed tRNA aspartic acid methyltransferase 1)—Transfers methyl groups to RNA.
• DNMT3—Responsible for unmethylated CpG island methylation.
