NRAMP

A protein of the solute carrier family 11, encoded by SLC11A1 on chromosome 2q35, which transports iron and other divalent metals (e.g., manganese, cobalt, zinc, cadmium and lead) across the apical membrane of enterocytes in the brush border of the GI mucosa and into cells by a proton-coupled process.

Abnormal in
Mutations of SLC11A1 have been associated with increased susceptibility to infections (e.g., tuberculosis and leprosy), and inflammatory diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease).
