the former name for STREPTOCOCCUS PNEUMONIAE, the causative agent of bacterial PNEUMONIA. The BACTERIUM was used in Griffith's experiments in which, unknowingly at the time, he demonstrated the gene transfer process of TRANSFORMATION.
