dimethyl sulfoxide /di·meth·yl sulf·ox·ide/ (DMSO) (di-meth´il sul-fok´sīd) a powerful solvent with the ability to penetrate plant and animal tissues and to preserve living cells during freezing; it is instilled into the bladder for relief of interstitial cystitis and has been proposed as a topical analgesic and antiinflammatory agent and for increasing penetrability of other substances. dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) [dīmeth′il] an organic solvent used as an antiinflammatory agent. indications It is instilled into the bladder for the treatment of interstitial cystitis. contraindication Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. adverse effects Among the most serious adverse reactions are GI disturbances, photophobia, disturbance of color vision, and headache. A garliclike body odor and taste in the mouth may occur. When applied topically, it can cause local irritations and carry toxins into the systemic circulation. dimethyl sulfoxide (dī·meˑ·th n an industrial solvent used as a treatment for interstitial cystitis; also used as an analgesic and antiinflammatory for muscle aches and arthritic conditions.
