diffuse axonal injury (DAI), a type of brain injury caused by shearing forces that occur between different parts of the brain as a result of rotational acceleration. The corpus callosum and the brainstem are often affected. DAI most commonly occurs in motor vehicle crashes when the vehicle suddenly stops. diffuse axonal injury Neurology A form of post-traumatic brain damage which results in significant neurologic sequelae in survivors.
