diethylpropion hydrochloride [dī·eth′ilprō′pē·on] an appetite suppressant; a central nervous system stimulant. indication It is prescribed as a short-term adjunct in the treatment of exogenous obesity. contraindications Arteriosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, history of drug dependence or drug abuse, hypertension, concomitant administration of a monoamine oxidase inhibitor within 14 days, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. adverse effects Among the more serious adverse reactions are restlessness and insomnia, increased blood pressure, arrhythmias, cardiovascular effects, nausea, dry mouth, and drug dependence.
