1. The property of some solutions of showing different colors at different concentrations.
2. The property of some crystals of exhibiting two different colors when viewed along different axes.

Property exhibited by certain transparent substances of producing two different colours depending upon the thickness of substance traversed, the directions of transmission of light and/or viewing, the concentration of the substance, etc. The most common example is that of crystals (e.g. tourmaline) that absorb unequally the ordinary and extraordinary rays.
