dichroism

Property exhibited by certain transparent substances of producing two different colours depending upon the thickness of substance traversed, the directions of transmission of light and/or viewing, the concentration of the substance, etc. The most common example is that of crystals (e.g. tourmaline) that absorb unequally the ordinary and extraordinary rays.
