Pediatrics Any of a series of activities, eg, raising the head, rolling over, walking or other significant points in a child's physical and/or mental development that may be used to assess maturation and detect developmental delays. See Developmental red flag.

Developmental scales for very young children fit within this tradition, replacing formal testing where this is impractical, although it should be noted that maternal reports of developmental milestones are subject to numerous sources of error such as inaccurate recall, differing definitions of certain behaviors, and presentational bias (Axelson and Rylander 1984).
