resource depletion

The dissipation of assets or reserves, esp. (in health care and the environment) those that affect public health.

Resource destruction is not in itself depletist if the resources in question can be sustained over time, say by replanting trees or by imposing fishing quotas under reproduction rates.
Clearly, technologies that depend on resources that cannot be renewed, at least at current levels of ingenuity--fossil fuels, for example--are thus structurally depletist.
