fluorocarbon/flu·o·ro·car·bon/ (floor´o-kahr″bәn) any of the class of organic compounds consisting of carbon and fluorine only. Fluorocarbon emulsions dissolve oxygen and carbon dioxide and can be used in place of red blood cell preparations in the prevention and treatment of ischemia.

A general term for a hydrocarbon in which some of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced with fluorine. The use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) is discouraged because of their adverse effect on the ozone layer of the earth's atmosphere.
