ergocalciferol /er·go·cal·cif·er·ol/ (er″go-kal-sif´er-ol) vitamin D; a sterol occurring in fungi and some fish oils or synthesized from ergosterol, with similar activity and metabolism to those of cholecalciferol; used as a dietary source of vitamin D and in the treatment of hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, rickets, and osteodystrophy associated with a variety of disorders.
