tocopherol

 [to-kof´er-ol]
an alcohol isolated from wheat germ oil or produced synthetically; it has the properties of vitamin E. In animals it is needed in the diet to ensure reproduction, but its role in humans is unclear.
alpha tocopherol a tocopherol isomer that is the most prevalent form of vitamin E occurring in the body and the form administered as a supplement. In nature, it usually occurs with β- and γ-tocopherols. The term is often used synonymously with vitamin E. See vitamin.

Washington, Apr 24 ( ANI ): Two forms of vitamin E - gamma and delta-tocopherols found in soybean, canola and corn oils as well as nuts do prevent colon, lung, breast and prostate cancers, according to a new study.
One possible explanation for the ineffectiveness of vitamin E in clinical trials is that the trials used only alpha-tocopherol, whereas the vitamin E that occurs naturally in food consists of alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol.
Foods are stripped of their naturally occurring vitamin E's--alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol and--tocotrienols--and replaced by a whopping dose of just one of the eight, alpha-tocopherol.
