Delta Sleep

Delta Sleep
The deepest form of sleep, in which the EEG waves are primarily < 4 Hz and correspond to stage 3, in which < 50% of the waves are delta; in stage 4, > 50% are delta waves. It is the most difficult stage from which to wake sleepers; when they are awakened, they are usually sleepy and disoriented. It is also the period during which sleep walking and sleep talking most often occur. Delta sleep is greatest in children and declines with age

Sleep and Aging studies have shown that retired individuals spend less time in delta sleep and younger people spend a greater amount of time in deep sleep, but REM sleep is constant throughout life.
The delta sleep is the deepest sleep that a person receives.
Stages N3 and N4, also called "delta-wave" sleep, are the deepest sleep periods; delta sleep rebounds after deprivation, as does REM sleep.
