removal of part of the beak, usually the front third of the upper beak, of domestic fowls as a prevention against cannibalism in birds in intensive housing. See also cannibalism.

They argue that purchasing "battery hen" eggs supports an institution that cages up to nine birds together, debeaks them, and forces them to continually lay eggs until they are calcium-depleted and on the verge of death--at which point, they are slaughtered.
Their beef is with the Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurant chain, which People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says uses suppliers who debeak and declaw the chickens without anesthesia.
