removal of part of the beak, usually the front third of the upper beak, of domestic fowls as a prevention against cannibalism in birds in intensive housing. See also cannibalism.

Peter Stevenson of CIWF says: `Tail-biting by pigs and feather-pecking by hens should be prevented not by slicing off pigs' tails and de-beaking hens but by keeping them in decent conditions.
