data encryption standard

A Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)-approved cryptographic algorithm for encrypting (enciphering) and decrypting (deciphering) binary coded information. Encrypting converts data to an unintelligible form called cipher, which is converted back to its original form (plaintext) by decrypting. DES specifies both enciphering and deciphering operations, which are based on a 64-bit binary number (a key); unauthorised recipients of the cipher without the correct key cannot derive the original data algorithmically. Data that is considered sensitive by the responsible authority, or data that represents a high value, should be cryptographically protected if it is vulnerable to unauthorised disclosure or undetected modification during transmission or while in storage.
