D-phenylalanine

D-phenylalanine (dēˑ-fē·n·laˈ·l·nēn),
n the isomeric form of the amino acid phenylalanine, some-times used to treat depression. Contraindicated in large doses for those taking antipsychotic medications or those with PKU. Also called
DL-phenylalanine.

Phenylalanine comes in two forms which are mirror images of each other L-phenylalanine which has a nutritional value, and D-phenylalanine which has pain killing and depression alleviating value which is attributed to its ability to block the breakdown of enkephalins, the brains natural pain killer neurotransmitter.
Enhanced pain relief has been discovered when D-phenylalanine is used in conjunction with prescribed pain killers.
D-Phenylalanine is the synthetic form produced in a laboratory environment.
