The immune system uses natural killer (NK) and cytotoxic T cells to help eliminate viral infections and cancer cells, explains Christoph Wuelfing, assistant professor in the Center for Immunology.
They argued that before cytotoxic T cells kill an infected cell, they recognize both a piece of virus and an MHC protein characteristic of the animal.
The data, published in the December issue of Nature Biotechnology, highlights a method for modifying targets on cancer cells called antigens to facilitate activation of cytotoxic T cells -- a key component of the immune system responsible for destroying cancerous cells.
