cysticercosis /cys·ti·cer·co·sis/ (sis″tĭ-ser-ko´sis) infection with cysticerci. In humans, infection with the larval forms of Taenia solium.
Cysticercosis Parasitic infection caused by the presence of immature tapeworm larvae (cysticerci) that have developed outside the intestinal tract. Infection is caused by accidental consumption of tapeworm eggs. Mentioned in: Tapeworm Diseases cysticercosis [sis′tisərkō′sis] Etymology: Gk, kystis + kerkos, tail, osis, condition an infection and infestation by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium or the beef tapeworm T. saginata. The eggs are ingested and hatch in the intestine; the larvae invade the subcutaneous tissue, brain, eye, muscle, heart, liver, lung, and peritoneum. They attach themselves with two rows of hooklets, grow, mature, and become covered with a dense, fibrous capsule. The invasive, early phase of the infection is characterized by fever, malaise, muscle pain, and eosinophilia. Years later seizures and personality change may appear if the brain is affected, and calcification and destruction of local structures are apparent in other infested areas of the body. Prophylaxis depends on eating only thoroughly cooked pork or beef. The antiparasitic drugs praziquantel or albendazole may be used to treat this infection on a case by case basis. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove cysticerci. cysticercosis (sisˈ·t n food-borne illness caused by the beef or pork tapeworm, usually from eating undercooked beef that contains, Taenia saginata or by eating pork that contains Taenia solium. When the eggs of either tapeworm are ingested, they will develop inside the intestine and eventually invade the entire body, causing fever, muscle pain, eosinophilia, and malaise. Long-term effects include calcification of infested areas, brain seizures, and personality changes. cysticercosis infection with cystercerci in the intermediate hosts of a number of species-specific cestodes. The disease is largely symptomless except for cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus cellulosae, but has some food hygiene importance. Called also sheep measles, beef measles. See cysticercus. cysticercosis Parasitology A condition caused by encystment by larvae from taeniid tapeworms–Taenia saginata–cattle tapeworm or T solium–swine tapeworm in the CNS and muscle Clinical Seizures, ischemic
