Related to Cyclic hydrocarbons: Aromatic hydrocarbons

hydrocarbon

 [hi″dro-kahr´bon]
an organic compound that contains carbon and hydrogen only.
alicyclic hydrocarbon one that has cyclic structure and aliphatic properties.
aliphatic hydrocarbon one in which no carbon atoms are joined to form a ring.
aromatic hydrocarbon one that has cyclic structure and a closed conjugated system of double bonds.
chlorinated hydrocarbon any hydrocarbon compound with chlorine substitutions; many are toxic. They are used mainly as refrigerants, industrial solvents, dry cleaning fluids, and insecticides (such as ddt and dieldrin). Some have been used as anesthetics, such as chloroform.

hy·dro·car·bon

(hī'drō-kar'bŏn),
A compound containing only hydrogen and carbon.

alicyclic hydrocarbon  one that has cyclic structure and aliphatic properties.
aliphatic hydrocarbon  one in which no carbon atoms are joined to form a ring.
aromatic hydrocarbon  one that has cyclic structure and a closed conjugated system of double bonds.
chlorinated hydrocarbon  any of a group of toxic compounds used mainly as refrigerants, industrial solvents, and dry cleaning fluids, and formerly as anesthetics.

hydrocarbon

[-kär′bən]
Etymology: Gk, hydor + L, carbo, charcoal
any of a large group of organic compounds whose molecules are composed of hydrogen and carbon, many of which are derived from petroleum. Brief incidental exposures to low concentrations of solvent vapors that contain carbon, such as gasoline, lighter fluids, aerosol sprays, and spot removers, may be relatively harmless, but exposures to concentrations of hydrocarbon vapors often found in the home and in manufacturing environments may be dangerous.
