Injuries Distal radial fractures occur in 1:4,000 snowboarding days, and represent 25% of snowboarding injuries—half require surgery; 17% of snowboarding injuries are shoulder fractures; spinal injuries are 3-fold more common in snowboarding than in skiing. Spinal cord injuries are much less common, and primarily affect young, male intermediate to expert boarders. Injuries are usually due to a miscalculated jump, resulting in an anterior thoracolumbar dislocation; most injuries are classified as Frankel grade A or B
