cromolyn /cro·mo·lyn/ (kro´mol-in) an inhibitor of the release of histamine and other mediators of immediate hypersensitivity from mast cells; used as the sodium salt for prophylaxis and treatment of allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma associated with allergy, and allergen-induced inflammation of the conjunctiva or cornea, and for treatment of mastocytosis. cromolyn a mast cell stabilizer which, if administered prior to exposure to allergens, prevents degranulation and release of histamine in a hypersensitivity reaction. Administered as an aerosol for prophylaxis of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. Investigated for use in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in horses. Called also cromoglycate. |

A combination of histamine antagonists and cromolyn sodium may block symptoms from mast cell degranulation. Whereas a recent study found that long-term lidocaine ointment application decreased pain scores and re-established sexual activity in a group of VVS sufferers (39), a more rigorous placebo-controlled study of the effectiveness of cromolyn (antihistamine) cream (40) did not reveal any evidence of effectiveness. Cromolyn and nedocromil are often the choice of medicine for children with mild asthma. |
