petroleum /pe·tro·le·um/ (pĕ-tro´le-um) a thick natural mixture of gaseous, liquid, and solid hydrocarbons obtained from beneath the surface of the earth.
petroleum benzin  a colorless, volatile, flammable fraction from petroleum distillation, containing largely hydrocarbons of the methane series; it has been variously described as a special grade of ligroin or as a separate but similar fraction with a lower boiling range. It is used chiefly as an extractive solvent.
