Cottage Hospital

Cottage Hospital
One of the small rural hospitals with up to 25 beds, which were established in the 19th century in the UK, first by Sir Astley Cooper, who converted some cottages near Hemel Hempstead for that purpose in 1827. Subsequently, another 80+ cottages were converted to hospitals in the UK. The advantage of such rural hospitals was that local doctors familiar with the patients could better manage them than the nearest county hospital.
