Since the posterior costophrenic angle is lower in position in the hemithorax than the lateral costophrenic angle, small pleural effusions typically cause blunting of the posterior costophrenic angle on the lateral chest radiograph before they cause blunting of the lateral costophrenic angle on the PA chest radiograph.
