Simeon Truby makes an outstandingly funny Bottom, the main mechanical; but the point about the mechanicals is that they are funniest when played with deadpan gravity - they don't think they are in the least funny, so to have Wall corpsing during the play-withinthe-play is unnecessary, to say the least.
But he also twice had the company themselves corpsing after what appeared to be gaffes, which naturally added to the magic.
