conus /co·nus/ (ko´nus) pl. co´ni [L.] 1. a cone or cone-shaped structure. 2. posterior staphyloma of the myopic eye. conus arterio´sus infundibulum; the anterosuperior portion of the right ventricle of the heart, at the entrance to the pulmonary trunk. conus medulla´ris the cone-shaped lower end of the spinal cord, at the level of the upper lumbar vertebrae. conus termina´lis conus medullaris. co´ni vasculo´si lobules of epididymis. conus pl. coni [L.] 1. a cone or cone-shaped structure. 2. posterior staphyloma of the myopic eye. conus arteriosus the funnel-shaped portion of the right ventricle of the heart at the entrance to the pulmonary trunk. conus medullaris the cone-shaped caudal end of the spinal cord; found at the level of the upper lumbar vertebrae in the human spine, but more caudally in domestic animals. conus medullaris Anatomy The inferior, tapering portion of the spinal cord. Flaccid paraparesis with urinary retention developed at this point, and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine demonstrated signal enhancement at the level of the conus medullaris. Further evaluation of the spine by MRI revealed the presence of a space-occupying lesion at the level of the conus medullaris and involvement of the leptomeninges in the thoracic and cervical areas. Intermediate (gray) signals are associated with the conus medullaris and the nerve roots of the cauda equina. |
