Flaccid paraparesis with urinary retention developed at this point, and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine demonstrated signal enhancement at the level of the conus medullaris.
Further evaluation of the spine by MRI revealed the presence of a space-occupying lesion at the level of the conus medullaris and involvement of the leptomeninges in the thoracic and cervical areas.
Intermediate (gray) signals are associated with the conus medullaris and the nerve roots of the cauda equina.
