The absence of the pleuroperitoneal membrane, allowing protrusion of abdominal viscera into the chest.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)
A condition in which the fetal diaphragm—the muscle dividing the chest and abdominal cavity—does not close completely.
