A search found Burden's notebook, in which he used the five-bar gate notation to keep a tally of the number of rabbits, crows and other animals it is legal to kill, and then used coded headings for illegal kills: 40 under BB - black buggers, meaning ravens; 37 under Billy - a country name for a badger; and 102 under an asterisk - which stood for common buzzards.
