An initiative by the UK government which is meant to provide patients with increased choice and autonomy in their own health care.

Goals
Improve quality and safety of patient services, reduce inequalities, engage GPs, involve the public, improve co-ordination with social services through greater “co-terminosity” (sharing of boundaries) of Primary Care Trust (PCT) and local governmental boundaries and effective use of resources.
