coccyx /coc·cyx/ (kok´siks) tail bone; the small bone caudal to the sacrum, formed by union of three to five rudimentary vertebrae, and forming the caudal extremity of the vertebral column.
Coccyx The last bone of the spinal column, consisting of three to five fused vertebrae that connect with the sacrum, a part of the pelvis. It is formed by the union of three to five probably vestigial rudimentary vertebrae. The pieces of the coccyx fuse together in males at an earlier period in life than in females. In both the coccyx becomes fused with the sacrum by the sixth decade of life. The coccyx is freely movable on the sacrum during pregnancy. coccygeal [koksij′ē·əl] , adj. coccyx collection of fused coccygeal vertebrae found in humans and apes.
