cloxacillin sodium [klok′səsil′in] a penicillinase-resistant penicillin used for bacterial infections. indications It is prescribed in the treatment of serious bacterial infections, primarily those caused by penicillinase-producing strains of staphylococci. contraindication Known hypersensitivity to this drug or to any penicillin prohibits its use. adverse effects Among the more serious adverse reactions are GI discomfort, rash, and hypersensitivity. cloxacillin sodium (klok´s brand names: Apo Cloxi, Cloxapen, Novo-cloxin, Tegopen; drug class: penicillinase-resistant penicillin; action: interferes with cell-wall replication of susceptible organisms; uses: effective for gram-positive cocci when penicillinase-producing organisms are the confirmed pathogens.
