The life cycle of the parasite is maintained in the wild by gray-backed voles, Clethrionomys rufocanus, as intermediate hosts, and by red foxes, Fulpes vulpes, as definitive hosts. Genetic diversity of Clethrionomys glareolus populations from highly contaminated sites in the Chornobyl region, Ukraine. Rodent species, such as the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) in the northeastern United States and Apodemus and Clethrionomys species in continental Europe, are common hosts of both immature ticks and LB spirochetes (8,9). |
