Cleaved Cell
A malignant lymphocyte with one or more deep clefts, linear infoldings of the nucleus, condensed chromatin and indistinct nucleoli. Cleaved cells are typical of follicular small cleaved cell lymphoma, an intermediate grade lymphoma which, despite widespread disease at the time of diagnosis, has a relatively prolonged and non-aggressive course. Large cleaved cells are typical of immunoblastic lymphoma (IL)

Expression of p53 protein is significantly increased in follicular large cell lymphoma (grade 3) compared with follicular small cleaved cell lymphoma (grade 1) in adults.
The neoplastic cells vary from small to large, showing folding and cleaving of the nuclei, resembling centrocytes (small- to medium-sized cleaved cells with inconspicuous nucleoli) and centroblasts (large noncleaved cells with vesicular chromatin and several peripheral nucleoli).
