The principal constituent of a polyhedral protein lattice that coats eukaryotic cell membranes (vesicles) and coated pits and appears to be involved in protein secretion and membrane trafficking. This protein also occurs in synaptic vesicles.
[L. clathri, lattice]
clathrina protein of eukaryotic cells occurring in indentations of the plasma membrane. These indentations are known as clathrin-coated pits; see RECEPTOR-MEDIATED ENDOCYTOSIS.
a highly conserved, fibrous protein, mol. wt 180,000, which forms a characteristic polyhedral coat on the surface of coated pits and coated vesicles.
