ciprofloxacin /cip·ro·flox·a·cin/ (sip?ro-flok´sah-sin) a synthetic antibacterial effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria; used as the hydrochloride salt.
ciprofloxacin, n brand name: Cipro; drug class: fluoroquinolone antiinfective; action: a broad-spectrum bactericidal agent that inhibits enzyme deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) gyrase needed for replication of DNA; uses: adult urinary tract infection, uncomplicated gonorrhea, typhoid fever; effective against some periodontal organisms. ciprofloxacin a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with particularly good activity against gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is used mainly in urinary tract infections. |
