ciguatoxin

ciguatoxin /ci·gua·tox·in/ (se´gwah-tok″sin) a heat-stable toxin originating in the dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus as a pretoxin and and concentrated as the active form in the tissues of certain marine fish; it causes ciguatera.

A potent neurotoxin that is secreted by various dinoflagellates, especially Gambierdiscus toxicus, and can accumulate in the flesh of tropical reef fish, causing ciguatera poisoning if they are eaten.

ciguatoxin
[se′gwätok′sin]
a heat-stable toxin originating in a dinoflagellate as a pretoxin and concentrating in active form in the tissue of certain marine fish (usually tropical reef fish), causing ciguatera in humans who eat the fish.

ciguatera [se″gwah-ta´rah]
a form of fish poisoning, marked by gastrointestinal and neurologic symptoms due to ingestion of tropical or subtropical marine fish such as the barracuda, grouper, or snapper that have ciguatoxin in their tissues.
