A better understanding of the association between chronic stress and low birth weight, they conclude, "may allow the development of more effective risk assessment measures or even interventions that could mitigate the damaging effects of the stress response" in low-income women. Other studies have suggested that residual trauma from witnessing episodic violence is a source of chronic stress for urban residents. Study authors believe that chronic stress may be linked to increased oxidative damage and depletion of an enzyme--telomerase--needed to rebuild aging cells. |
