chro·maf·fin cell

a cell that stains with chromic salts; found in adrenal medulla and paraganglia of the sympathetic nervous system.

chromaffin cell

any one of the special cells that compose the paraganglia and are connected to the ganglia of the celiac, renal, suprarenal, aortic, and hypogastric plexuses. The chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla secrete two catecholamines, epinephrine and norepinephrine, which affect smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands in the same way as sympathetic stimulation, by increasing and prolonging sympathetic effects.
