A connective tissue cell that occupies a lacuna within (the )cartilage matrix. Also called cartilage cell.

Etymology: Gk, chondros + kytos, cell
any one of the polymorphic cells that form the cartilage of the body. Each contains a nucleus, a relatively large amount of clear cytoplasm, and the common organelles. chondrocytic, adj.

The current study has shown that chondrocytes within injured and degenerating cartilage have more PTH type 1 receptors on their surfaces, which makes them especially sensitive to the PTH signal.
OA cartilage lesions are usually larger and unconfined and so do not provide an appropriate environment for chondrocytes to be retained long enough to build a framework (matrix).
It comprises cartilage cells, the so-called chondrocytes and the extracellular matrix (ECM), which can be considered to be a macromolecular framework consisting of two major components: collagens (70% of the dry weight of cartilage); and proteoglycans (25% of the dry weight).
