choline acetyltransferase /cho·line ac·e·tyl·trans·fer·ase/ (ko´lēn as″ĕ-tēl-trans´fer-ās) an enzyme catalyzing the synthesis of acetylcholine; it is a marker for cholinergic neurons.

An enzyme, present at the presynaptic ends of axons, that catalyzes the transfer of the acetyl group of acetyl CoA to choline, forming acetylcholine.
