In comparison with the control, the 1% organic white lupine extract increased the newly synthesized epidermal lipids of different classes (Figure 4): * polar lipids by 64%; * ceramides by 44%; * cholesterol and cholesterol sulfate by 100% and 45% respectively; and * cerebrosides by 20%.
Amongst the lipids, it is usually the phospholids that can be considered as micronutrients but one should also consider free fatty acids, cerebrosides and cholesterol, and there are some minor fatty acids in the triglycerides that are considered to be important.
Recent research revealed that certain sphingolipids, including cerebrosides and ceramides, form tubular microstructures upon hydration.
