cavernous sinus thrombosis

cavernous sinus thrombosis,
a syndrome, usually secondary to infections near the eye or nose, characterized by orbital edema, venous congestion of the eye, and palsy of the nerves supplying the extraocular muscles. The infection may spread to involve the cerebrospinal fluid and meninges. Treatment involves antibiotics and sometimes anticoagulants.

cavernous sinus (kav´rns),
n one of a pair of irregularly shaped, bilateral venous channels located below the base of the brain between the sphenoid bone of the skull and the dura mater. Also called
cavernous venus sinus.
cavernous sinus thrombosis,
n an infection of the cavernous venous sinus. Increased risk with local anesthesia in the maxillary arch if infection is present (“needle track” infection).

thrombosis (thrombō´sis),
n presence of a clot or deposit in a blood vessel, formed in situ and remaining in place. An abnormal vascular condition in which a thrombus (blood clot) develops within a blood vessel of the body.
thrombosis, cavernous sinus,
n a blood clot in the cavernous sinus occasionally arising from maxillary periapical infection. The prognosis is poor but not so grave as before antibiotic therapy.
thrombosis, coronary,
n thrombosis of the coronary artery; also called
heart attack and
coronary occlusion.

Examples of otitis media complications include mastoiditis, meningitis, periauricular subperiosteal abscess, epidural or subdural abscess, brain abscess, lateral sinus thrombophlebitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis, and facial paralysis.
[FIGURE 6 OMITTED] The distribution of those complications in Gallaghar's retrospective analysis was as follows: epidural abscess 23%, subdural empyema 18%, meningitis 18%, cerebral abscess 14%, superior sagittal sinus thrombosis 9%, cavernous sinus thrombosis 9%, and osteomyelitis 9%.
