caustics,
strong alkaline chemicals, such as hydrofluoric acid, that destroy soft body tissues, resulting in deep penetrating burns and corrosion of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes on contact. Caustics are usually the hydroxides of light metals. Exposure may be by inhalation or ingestion. Treatment of exposure to these agents involves irrigation of exposed areas and neutralization of the substance.
