In the study, researchers at the U-M Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center showed acupuncture increased the binding availability of mu-opoid receptors (MOR) in regions of the brain that process and dampen pain signals - specifically the cingulate, insula, caudate, thalamus and amygdala.
Compared with controls, bulimia patients showed deficits in the activation of circuits in the brain's left side (the inferolaterl prefrontal cortex and the left lenticular nucleus) and in the right side (the ventral and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, the putamen, and the caudate nucleus).
