cathepsin /ca·thep·sin/ (kah-thep´sin) one of a number of enzymes each of which catalyzes the hydrolytic cleavage of specific peptide bonds.

an endopeptidase found in most cells, which takes part in cell autolysis and self-digestion of tissues.
