cat's claw

claw (klaw) a nail of an animal, particularly a carnivore, that is long and curved and has a sharp end.
cat's claw  a woody South American vine, Uncaria tomentosa or a preparation of its root bark, which has antiviral, immunostimulant, and antiinflammatory properties and is used in folk medicine.
devil's claw  a perennial herb, Harpagophytum procumbens, whose dried tubular secondary roots and lateral tubers are used for dyspepsia, loss of appetite, and rheumatism; also used in homeopathy for rheumatism and in folk medicine.

cat's claw,
an herb that belongs to the madder family, found in South America and Southeast Asia.
uses It is used for cancer, herpes, arthritis, gastritis, gout, wounds, and gastric ulcers. There may be short-term benefits when used for osteoarthritis, but effectiveness for other indications has not been proven.
contraindications It is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation and in children younger than 3 years of age until more research is available. It also should not be used in people with muscular sclerosis, tuberculosis, or hemophilia or in those who have had organ transplants.

Uncaria tomentosa, Uncaria guianensis; parts used: leaves, roots, bark from stems; uses: antiinflammatory, contraceptive, immune system stimulant, colon disease, arthritis, irritable bowel disease, Crohn's disease; precautions: pregnancy, lactation, patients with MS, AIDS, tuberculosis, hemophilia, and organ transplant recipients.
