There are not many recent studies evaluating the recovery of enteric pathogens from delayed transport of fecal specimens in Cary-Blair medium.
The delivery time is frequently 2-3 weeks after the specimen was collected, and the only reliable method to allow bacteriologic diagnosis remains bubo aspiration (as well as sputum and postmortem liver or lung puncture, whenever appropriate) and transportation on a swab in Cary-Blair medium.
