carisoprodol /car·iso·pro·dol/ (kar″i-so-pro´dol) an analgesic and skeletal muscle relaxant used to relieve symptoms of acute painful skeletomuscular disorders. carisoprodol [ker′isōprō′dol] a skeletal muscle relaxant. indication It is prescribed for the relief of muscle spasm. contraindications Porphyria or known hypersensitivity to this drug or to chemically similar drugs, such as meprobamate, prohibits its use. adverse effects Among the more serious adverse reactions are ataxia, drowsiness, pronounced weakness, visual disturbances, mental confusion, anaphylactic shock, erythema multiforme, and allergic reactions. carisoprodol (ker´īsōprō´dol), n brand names: Soma, Vanasom; drug class: skeletal muscle relaxant, central acting; action: nonspecific central nervous system sedation; uses: adjunct for relief of muscle spasm in musculoskeletal conditions. carisoprodol Carisoma (UK), Soma Pharmacologic class: Carbamate derivative Therapeutic class: Centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant Controlled substance schedule IV (in some states) Pregnancy risk category C ActionUnknown. Adverse reactionsCNS: dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, ataxia, depression, headache, insomnia, vertigo, tremor, depression CV: hypotension, tachycardia GI: nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress Hematologic: eosinophilia, leukopenia Respiratory: asthma attacks Skin: flushing (especially of face), rash, pruritus, erythema multiforme Other: hiccups, fever, psychological drug dependence, anaphylactic shock InteractionsDrug-drug. Antihistamines, opioids, sedative-hypnotics: additive CNS depression Drug-diagnostic tests. Eosinophils: increased count Drug-herbs. Chamomile, hops, kava, skullcap, valerian: increased CNS depression Drug-behaviors. Alcohol use: increased CNS depression Patient monitoring• When giving to breastfeeding patient, watch for signs of sedation and GI upset in infant.
